Luis Rioja's goal proves insufficient for a share of the points
A late goal in Seville meant that Valencia CF were beaten 2-1 by Real Betis on LaLiga Matchday 22, having looked set to draw the game. Luis Rioja scored Valencia CF's goal.
Valencia CF started the match with determination and energy, and within seconds they had their first attack. However, in the fifth minute, Real Betis almost took the lead after a move inside the penalty area in which Antony passed to Abde, from which the latter missed with his shot.
The response from Carlos Corberán's men was a move that ended at the feet of Rioja, but his shot was blocked by a Betis defender. Shortly after, Hugo Duro headed a cross from Gayà, which failed to find the target.
Five minutes later, Arnaut Danjuma won a penalty for Valencia CF when he was brought down by Ruibal. Pepelu stepped up to take the spot kick, but goalkeeper Arturo Valles saved the effort.
Amidst a frenetic pace, Valencia CF continued to create chances, with Ugrinic very active in attacking play. In the 20th minute, the reward came: Rioja took a great shot from outside the area that deceived Valles, off a great assist from Beltran, and made it 0-1.
However, two minutes after the goal, the referee awarded penalty to Real Betis, from an action in which Copete cleared the ball and Ruibal took advantage of the situation to draw contact and go down. Chimy Ávila levelled from the resulting penalty.
For the next few minutes, both teams battled at a high tempo for control of the game. With one minute remaining in the first half, Valencia CF had a great opportunity to score their second goal, but Foulquier's shot went outside the post.
SECOND HALF
Three minutes after the restart, Valencia CF had two great chances to go back ahead, first through Beltrán and then via Ugrinic. The Betis defence and Valles thwarted both opportunities.
In the 60th minute, another dangerous attack came when Rioja crossed to the far post for Danjuma, requiring the Betis goalkeeper to make the save.
Sadiq, Santamaría, and Almeida came on in a triple change, followed swiftly by Diego López also came off.
Near to the 80th minute, Ugrinic tested the keeper with a shot from outside the box, and at the other end Betis hit on the counter -Abde striking wide.
With two minutes remaining in regulation time, Betis' Deossa got into the box and passed to Fornals. The rebound from his shot fell to Deossa himself, who then fired home to make it 2-1 and deny Valencia CF a point.
Valencia CF will host Athletic Club at Mestalla on Wednesday, in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey.
